Backup punter stabs rival in attempt to become starter
This one’s pretty sick, and definitely boneheaded. Mitch Cozad was a backup punter for Northern Colorado. Apparently he wasn’t happy with his status — he wanted to be the starter. So in a Tonya Harding-like incident on September 11 of last year, Cozad ambushed the starting punter, Rafael Mendoza, in the parking lot. Cozad stabbed a deep gash in Mendoza’s kicking leg, but Mendoza was convinced that Cozad was trying to kill him! Cozad was acquitted of attempted murder charges, but he got 7 years in prison for second-degree assault. So being the starting punter for Northern Colorado is worth attempted murder? This guy is messed up.
